Throughout the long history of Rock in Worcester, there are only a few really legendary CHARACTERS. There was only one Lee Vachon. He lived the part to the hilt. He played with me shortly in Smokin Joe, but since he could never make it into the 3rd set without keeling over,it ended quickly. I had spent 2 yrs in a basement with Donny Thayer and Paul Tringuk writing songs and recording. I hated it after a while, knowing that what I thought was secondary in this band. Actually I was all set to go to Germany to record an Album for Pauls cousin Kevin Michaels, when I got a phone call the night before telling me that I wasn’t going. Paul was gonna play everything so screw you. After that experience I hooked up with Donny for 1 gig(I realized after 1 gig this was going nowhere fast). I got a call from Lee and Bobby Young..hey lets start a new band. We got Peter Fowler to play drums(he also brought his twin brother Paul the clone with him). Ronnie Dupont(Old lead singer from Alcock) came along as the front man. Lee and I were writing a lot of tunes. We cut 5 of them at Conecticutt recording Studios in Bridgeport CT. These songs rocked the house. We had gotten the perfect Marshall crunch tone there. There wasn’t so much great solos, but the rock attitude came across with the same power only the best of bands had. Ronnie disapeared to try and correct his life problems and we couldn’t get him back. We ended up playing 2 gigs with LEE singing. He wasn’t a bad singer, it just wasn’t the same kind of a feel we had just recorded. I started to lose interest, and lee started to get some alternative offers. I just wanted to play softball and get away. So it died. Too bad this was truly a great band, but all fringe stuff going on were too much of a distraction. I went looking elsewhere.

The one night gig I did with Donni Thayer was with a band called Onyx. Ernie Abdallah was the drummer. I recently listened to some rehearsal tapes and we actually sounded good and the original material was fine. The problem was when I played with them no body brought any amps but me(an original Marshall HT-45). The bass and Keys were going direct and nothing was coming through the monitors. It sounded like just guitar and drums on stage and that was horrible. So bad that I packed up and was never heard from again…Johnny Press

Finally, it looks like I’m going to be able to put the 5 Leader Dog songs on CD. Fans of Lee Vachon should be thrilled, It has 3 of his best tunes. Coming soon..I hope

I use to play guitar with Donnie and Paul in Section 5 of the late sixties. Lee was a great guitar player that I knew from The New Breed and Alcock. If you get any tunes on cd let me know. Thanks.
