After the fight New Years eve that finished Southpaw, Under the Gun was born. We had picked up David Cimpaglia on drums and another guitarist. This was by far a lot more rockin than Southpaw, so Charlie and I decided that we should change the name. I came up with it, Charlie liked it so thats what it was Under the Gun. this band smoked and got great reviews after playing with Molly hatchett. The problem was Charlie’s heart wasn’t in it and I could tell that this wasn’t going to last too much longer. We played 5 nights a week every week and were excellent. Finally David Cimpaglia had an offer to join the Fools. I knew that would be a more stable situation for him and gave him my blessings and said goodbye. Charlie then decided he was moving back down South. The band was over. Bobby and I were hanging out with Jack Hoffman talking about what might have been with the band when we heard Southpaw was doing a reunion at Sir Morgans Cove. Thats cool except we weren’t invited. I don’t believe I’ve ever so pissed off in my life. I guess Nelson ( who I put in the hospital) wouldn’t play with us. So Charlie didn’t invite us. Thanks Charlie( why not use us instead of him..hmm thats a thought). Anyway.. Bobby and I went down to the Cove to see them. They were great which even pissed me off more. people would walk up to me and ask me when I was gonna play..I’d have to tell..I’m not ..Charlie won’t let me. Well a lot of time has gone by since those days and I don’t hold any grudges, playing with Charlie was a blast. He’s so talented and i don’t think he realizes it. You might be hearing more about Charlie and myself in the future. In the meantime we are putting together live Southpaw tracks from 1978-9 that terrific. Hopefully we can them on line to you soon…Johnny Press
